Five units, really just three ideas.

Roentgen, gray, sievert, rem, C/kg — a wall of vocabulary that hides a simple truth: radiation is measured at just three points, and most of them have an old US name and a new metric one. See the three, and every unit sorts itself.

1The problem

One beam gets measured three times.

Radiation is measured at three different points on its journey: as it leaves the machine, in the air, as it soaks into tissue, and by how much biological harm it does. Each point needs its own number — you can't use one for all three.

On top of that, most quantities carry two names: an older US ("traditional") unit and a newer metric ("SI") one — like miles versus kilometers. That's the only reason the list looks long. Tap through the three below.

Those are the metric anchors. Each has a traditional partner: exposure also = C/kg, Gray's old name is rad, Sievert's old name is rem. And the two conversions worth memorizing: 1 Gy = 100 rad, 1 Sv = 100 rem.

It won't ask for a definition — it describes what's being measured and wants the unit, or gives one name and wants its partner. Match the words:

Gray. Absorbed dose = "how much soaked into tissue" = Gray (Gy), traditionally the rad. Roentgen and C/kg measure exposure in air; Sievert measures equivalent dose.
